Talk to executives about AI, and you will almost always hear the same excuse:
"It’s not really thinking. It’s just predicting the next word like a glorified autocomplete."
People say this because it makes them feel safe. If AI is just a giant math calculator, then human intelligence is still special. It means the gut instinct and intuition of a human investor are safe from being replaced.
But while the math part of that statement is true, what it says about human intelligence is completely wrong.
When we dismiss AI as "just predicting the next word," we forget something important: that is exactly what our own brains do.
We like to believe we are in complete control of our thoughts. We imagine a little pilot inside our heads carefully planning every word on a whiteboard before we speak. But let's test that idea.
Imagine lying in bed the night before a big meeting. You tell your brain: "Stop thinking."
You can't do it. Within seconds, a random memory, a worry about work, or a completely unrelated idea will pop into your head. If you are truly the author of your thoughts, you should be able to turn them off. The fact that you can't proves that you are not generating your thoughts in real-time. You are just experiencing them after your brain has already put them together.
We communicate the exact same way. When you explain a stock pitch to a friend, you don't plan every single word in advance. You just know the general idea, and you open your mouth. Your brain automatically serves up the next logical word as you speak. You don't know how your sentence will end when you start it.
You are a biological autocomplete engine.
AI models like ChatGPT are trained on massive amounts of text. They guess the next word, and if they are wrong, they adjust their internal math so they can guess better next time.
We dismiss this as cold math. But modern brain science says this is the exact foundation of human life.
A leading scientific theory called "Predictive Coding" shows that your brain is locked in a dark skull. It survives by constantly guessing what will happen next : what you will see, what you will hear, or what a competitor will do in the market.
It only pays attention to the outside world when it guesses wrong. When it makes a mistake, it updates its mental model so it can predict better next time. The way AI learns from its mistakes is mathematically identical to how our brains learn from ours.
There are differences, of course. We have physical bodies, emotions, and survival instincts. We learn from real-world experiences like physical pain and market panics. AI, right now, just learns from text on a screen.
Because of this, a human investor understands the real-world chaos of a factory strike better than an AI does.
But do not bet that humans will keep this advantage forever. As AI models get bigger and start learning from video, audio, and real-time data, they are building a real understanding of how the world works. Given enough computing power, the gap between human intuition and AI logic is shrinking fast.
It is easy to doubt AI until you use it for serious work. When you test these systems against messy financial data, the theoretical arguments end. We are seeing AI move from just "writing text" to doing actual, deep reasoning.
This is just massive computing power doing the heavy lifting of predicting what comes next.
Stop debating whether AI is "really thinking." It is a distraction.
If your edge at work relies entirely on reading historical data and guessing the next logical step, you are at risk. The machine can process more data, faster, without getting tired.
The leaders of tomorrow are the ones who understand this today. Your highest value is no longer being the prediction engine. Your job is to set the goal and build the strategy. The business heads, investors and founders who win will be the ones who point the AI in the right direction, and let it execute at a speed humans simply cannot match.
You are a biological prediction machine. It is time to start teaming up with the artificial ones.
